MEDIA Culture - growing Uncultured.

Here is my version of the song I'll stand by you. Not a great song. But loved it especially by one of the performers in American idol. Reminded me of the tamil song " Kangalil enna eerama? Nenjinil enna baarama?"

Now, coming to the post :)
MEDIA Culture - Growing Uncultured.
Last week was excellent for We in our family did get some time to spend with together & it was Quality time ;). TOUCH WOOD. On Sunday morning while I was browsing through the news paper, I came across the TV programme column and this idea to watch a movie together with family struck me. And my eyes fell upon one movie that was joked alot about during the college days, starring one of the heroes from the movie boyz(which i have not seen yet- never will see too.)

I was told it is an ADULTS only movie. So I rechecked the timing- it was the evening movie!!

DUH!!!

Are people losing sense these days?? Don’t we get to watch a decent movie ATLEAST on weekends??On a Sunday evening..come on! There got to be a mistake! But nope, that was the movie played that evening & we ended up watching a different show.

Its time Tamil channels also better start to have the U,U/G,A notifications while playing movies- the trend that Star movies follow really well.

MOVIES-
These days they are playing adult(e)rated movies on channels that are supposed to be showing family entertainment movies. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure kids are watching good programs only. Sometime back(a couple of times) they did play the movie Boyz on Sunday & on a festive day. This movie is not a good choice for kids to watch. Does it mean this generation is taking everything for granted? Those who chose to telecast these- are they trying to take any revenge- probably a childhood problem? Is there even someone in the censor board who do some WORK AT ALL? People who telecast -Don’t they have any idea about the fact that people sit with family; mainly that children watch these?

These days most of them in the movie industry do not seem to realize the responsibility & that is one reason am so against people going crazy over those who don’t even realize the fact that they are spoiling & corrupting young minds.

Not just hero’s, but the heroines too.I accept that the competition is too much for these girls these days to get an offer, because the directors have lost sense about on what basis one should be chosen to act as heroine. And that has brought in a lot of junks inside the industry, which once had heroines like ….. (am only getting the picture of black & white movies’s! :O yes ofcourse….There are decent one’s in later years too..) Revathy, Suhasni….. And a FEW more.

These days the need for a glamour artist exclusively is cut down. Lucky directors! May be that’s one reason they don’t mind about getting cheap girls (No offence- girls who come in at cheap rates to act) to act as heroine. They don’t care about the kind of moves they are asked to do in a dance & the costumes for the dance & sometimes the dance itself actually has no role in that scene or the following one. Best example in that category is - in the movie Rhythm(Not a bad movie though :P )When the kid is enjoying the rain at night in the terrace there is this song Ayyo pathikuchu…pathikuchu… And I went like. “Did I by mistake change the channel or something?” From no where people start dancing in the stage & the kid who was supposed to be in bed sleeping is there in the podium sitting watching the dance. Apdiye potaalum..ippo mazhai ila peyudhu..edhuku indha ponnu pathikuchunu koovings?? Kodumai !?!

Our tamil industry hero’s are not exceptional- they are ok with any silly mannerisms & some stupid dialogues that do have double meaning. Vulgar dialogues(Sombu movies), rubbish gestures(Poriki – yaaradhu pokiri’nu padikrahdu??....i meant porikki seyra velaigal), Horrible onscreen behaviour , NOTHING-BUT RUBBISH. I can understand if they are trying to screen a bad guy turn good guy. In that case if hero’s act as how villains would, its fine. But they are imposing on us to accept the hero be that way through out the movie – that is being the actual personality- the hero do stupid things , tease girls, do all rubbish, Behave like an absolute Idiot , Speak filthy language, Dress indecent, still more to list….YUKK!The very thought that these are the guys – today’s young generation is going crazy over annoys me, ire me & worry me!

What are they to be celebrated as great heroes for?? Instead they can go for a Mr.Bean or say vivek rasigar mandram & have a huge cut out for him (Come on – give the guy some credit, if you can take these morons as HERO! He atleast puts a smile &even make you laugh! He has a huge fan club :D Lets not pull him here…..)

My only question is why all these hype for SOME GUY who do not even care about what he is corrupting the young minds with? Certain things cannot be undone & corrupting young minds is one! Well, the language~ Dialogue- acting- dance- ….in the name of this, these guys do all funny awkward things & they are accepted by a huge crowd. To be frank not just accepted but celebrated too!

In a crowd where everyone is a fool but one man who may differ in the idea may be looked upon as an idiot, that doesn’t leave him with option to act a fool. But that is what is happening today! Even those who do understand this, act stupid – they just want to move with the crowd. So they also join the bajan! Although they know that this guy is absolute curse for the culture!

Name just any movie – any actor - any thing. They go HOOGAA HOOGAA!

If it’s the TOSS…”hey macha Toss superdaa..Naan first day first show parthen da.nee?”

Or PORIKI-…”Dey PORIKI…enna padam da… Namma vaal/mooku/kannu enama nadichrukaar pathiya. Kovil dhaan”

Or FREEDOM-… “Freedom! Summa top gear’la odudhula padam. 3 dhadava pathuten dee!”

I have no personal aversion towards any one in the movie industry. But I do respect people who act with SOME DIGNITY & RESPONSIBILITY, which is like....very rare now. Thanks to people with some dignity like ;) aravind swamy who has gently withdrawn from this rat race.

If and only if the directors, script writers, lyricist & actors (well they can choose what not to do atleast!) act more responsible, things will get any better. Otherwise we may be leading the future to grow numb to such non-sense. Simply by repeatedly getting us used to see such non-sense they are trying to impose & make us take it as sense. But non-sense is always going to be that. And we must not forget it.

We are able to understand that the media is not actually bothered about what to play, when to play & movie makers too forget what SENSE is. If we are paying Rs 50 for a drink & there a sip of drainage in it we cannot ignore it. Will you? So is the case when they make movies. They should rate them properly- HONESTLY! And those who telecast them in TV should know what to play when. Its alright when you have any non-sense in an adult rated movie. But they keep giving us non-sense in those that the younger generation watch and try to get the idea that THIS IS NOT WRONG, when it is absolute CRAP! Individual has to be responsible. Its each one’s responsibility to know what is right and wrong. But it would be better if these people in the media act responsible too.

The present TV culture is spoiling kids. The programs where kids are asked to call the VJ’s to have a chit chat with shows how far it has gone. Sometimes watching kids speak I that show, really would make you feel dizzy. They are so much spoiled by the media.

NOTE TO THE PARENTS:

# Know what your kid is watching.

# Suggest the shows that are suitable for them to watch.

#Encourage them to go outside & play. Trust me, it is better than watching the stupid box.

#Channels like Discovery, National geography,History channel can also be fun.Do find out programs that could interest your kid in the junior time.Of course Disney,pogo,CN,Nickelodeon,...goes without saying. :)

# It is better not to watch certain shows with kids around. I do not imply late night shows, but today – yes the shows that really do have some not-for-kids stuff. That also includes some of the songs – in the music channels.

#Never hesitate to tell your kid that – "This is not what it is, these are buffoon in the movies that act this way simply to make money. In real world people do not talk or behave this way. If they do so they will be looked upon as nothing but fools."

# Do tell them that- it is only an entertainer and not a preacher.

# When you see your kid imitate any of the acts/dialogue's/song that are not appropriate for kids (seena thaan too)- stop the kid right there & tell that it is Wrong & not to follow or imitate these. It may be entertaining & amusing for you to see your child imitate but it is never good. This could in fact encourage the child to create a passion towards such things.

# Do get some good videos , nice movies and ask your kid to watch it, you can join him too and make the time a pleasant memorable time.

# Encourage the kids to get involved in creative works than watch TV. These days the cable channels do not have nothing big left for the kids to learn from. They are out of good stuff. Only rarely do you find something nice & do watch it with them.

# Try to make your kid understand what may be suitable to watch & what not in your absence too. Encourage the kid being responsible by reward-punishment method. Punish doesn’t mean spanking the kid :)

Let them grow healthy…. Healthy mind is necessary for a healthy body.

Growing up cultured is even more important!

All that I have shared in this post are my personal views. They are not intended to offend any one. Thavarai meendum meendum seivadhanaal, adhu sari endru aagi vidaadhu! Adhanai pondradhey idhu - indraya thiraipada kalachaaram.

well i agree, sometimes the movies are full of crap, thank fully neither me nor my sister are interested in this...i prefer movies where there is a decent story line(well,i guess it is no tamil movies)...

hmm...yes i know, how guys are get excited abt all the movies, but as for people dressing up and stuff,i am not saying anything...it is there wish and they can do whatever they want....

as for T.V. channels plying A movies, well where are decent movies made?

sometimes i guess the lines get changed and it is left to us to draw them where we want.....for eg,

when i was in 4th and 5th i used to be scared of seniors and that they will rag us and things, but now a days the juniors don't care and talk rudely to us,the problem is we can't make them speak properly thanks to all these rules and stuff.....

Can you sing this song for us

Individuals should develop responsibilty for themselves.

as for some movies, accepted some are really vulgur and bad but some movies reflect the day to day situation, though it wil be hard to accept that..

note to the parents.. was really awesome.

but about the child imitating...it is actually cute and nice to see them do that, parents gets excited and suprised to see how a child gives attention to the minor details and imitates them.

films like Lage Raho, RDB, Anbe Sivam , Kannathil Muttamittal which take our cinema to global standards and are clean entertainers should be promoted. Hmmm....enga...ella kutty vaanduganlum daan Vijay and Simbu fansa irukkae :-(

I completely agree on the point about "ratings" for the movies. They are rarely honest and definitely need to be worked upon. Beyond that I do not believe in curbing anything which does not affect the sentiments of the masses. Boys as a movie was right, it was the reality. But the U/A rating which it got is what needs to be corrected.

I believe you are taking the stand of a purist by saying this is how things are meant to be. Cinema is not about reality alone, there are fantasies which provide real good entertainment and there are people who want a dose of that entertainment on the big screen.

It is practically impossible for every actor/director to think about the impact of his work on the young minds. They are not national leaders, they are mere artistes. This is where the certifying bodies come into the picture to decide what's 18+ and what's 21+ etc. Even if that happens how much is it implemented in the theaters? No point in blaming the creators just because you do not have an effective system in place to filter unwanted stuff. They have every right to appeal to their target audience : adults. Not everybody wants a Revathy and a Suhasini. There are people who want a Namitha on-screen.

Next, the issue of stupid mannerisms and unnecessary dialogue on screen making kids imitate them. This is taking things a bit too far. Kids will remain kids. They will imitate stuff. You take them to a zoo and they'll imitate a monkey. Make them watch Cartoon Network and they'll imitate Swat Cats shooting weapons or a Johnny Bravo wooing girls. It is thus unfair to expect an actor to think that his heroism will affect kids. Kids get affected by everything. Are you 100% sure that no kid would have wondered about what "midnight masala" or "shakeela" or "podangooo" means when they hear Vivek mouth it? Lets not transfer responsibility from the parents to the actors. It's the duty of the parents to guide their children.

You say you fail to understand why there is so much hype and hoopla for these 'stupid' movies. The answer is simple. It is question of what the a person expects and what he gets back in return. There is a huge mass which is going to the theaters for light entertainment, fun and frolic and is ready to discount logic. One the other hand there are a big bunch of people who swear by 'meaningful' cinema. And it so happens that the latter are easily outnumbered by the other lot. This explains why a wonderful movie like Anbe Sivam bombed, while at the same time a masala movie like Dhool was a superhit. You completely hate Sivaji, while I saw it three times in the theater. Reason : We have different expectation from movies. I cannot advocate what should appeal to you and vice versa :)

As a matter of fact I am very much against Vijay, Ajith and Sombhu mouthing punch dialogues and doing some mannerisms. I associate it only with Rajni and I hate it when these guys do it. But does that stop them from having millions of fans? All I can do is make fun of the movie, but it does not really matter. There are people who want that movie which I do not want.

There is nothing which has a universal appeal. There are atheists. There are people who hate their families. There are people who hate children. Now that's enough testimony. So as long as you satisfy the expectation of your 'target segment', all is well. If it spoils kids, its the parents fault. If it spoils adults, it is their personal stupidity.

I do agree that media (TV, print) do a lot of stuff for money. Unlike the case of big screen, kids have a very high exposure to these channels of entertainment which explains why there needs to be a greater level of control, more so when they claim to be "family channels". The concept is similar to the CBFC ratings for movies and needs to be looked into, no doubt.

But I do not believe that there is a definitive "do's and don'ts list for parents to follow". I mean its their call as to how much of freedom they give. Example : I have been addicted to Rajni movies, watched some more than 20 times on tape, stupidly imitated him when I was a child. My parents never complained. They gave me that freedom to enjoy and have fun. I am not romaing as a tharuthalai now. I am doing a MBA from a reputed college and they are happy with what I am :) ... It's just a personal decision. You just need to ensure that things get back in control if the such things seem to be affecting the child in some way.

Stop looking for panaceas. They do not exist. Different people have different choices and different outlooks. Neither can be termed inappropriate. It's a personal choice :)

Hi marutham

What I think is Television channels need censor on their shows. If channels declared themselves its for people (makkalukkga) or yours sun, moon, star or any TV that signs every body from kids to elders, so they have the response to show good programs that could entertain all.

About cinema what ever they can shoot or telecast through theater… but everything must be censored and brought in the certificate that this is not suitable for particular people (esp. children), even though they go and watch it with them and tells its violent, bad, nonsense…. They know some films are not good for children; even they take them to watch means whose fault it would be. Before going to watch the film just know what the certificate tells. The poster that publishes the films should also present the certification sign.

I have the doubt that directors are selecting the heroines based on talents or how much skin they can show. The rising money reduces the cloths. Today’s time even the cartoons have violence and glamour female characters that gonna be worst. What is when we stop some kids from watching that specific program, there interest on know that increases? Before going on it, parents must try to change their mind to some other interesting activities that watching TV, and spending the times with them helps to understand.

Like you said, its all the parenting that makes a diff. Identifying & correcting the kid when there is a change in behaviour is the parent's job.

I shall stand by you. Hmmm nice voice. You have the interest. Why can't you try some more songs. Do you know to play any instruments like Guitar? Well.. I agree with your views about the movies. I had put a post long before on the same line. There is no rating on top of the DVD's and we land up in trouble when we start the movie with kids. So, since few years, I enquire about the movie well in advance to some friends and then buy those DVD's and play them at home. It is a shame that our movies have gone to that extent of violence and scenes.

I agree with you that local channels should start rating the movie before they telecast the movies.

Parents should also be conscious on what their kids are watching rather than letting their children to watch TV and feel happy that their children are not causing any trouble.

I recently observed that a children channel called Jetix was showing WWF(wrestling). I feel this is not a program that kids should see.

Kudos for bringing up a nice point!!

Its a very good writing as well as thinking. I totaly agree with all the points and I realised this four years ago. You and me are able to comment on this since we could recognise something is going wrong. But if today's kid growing in such a environment, could not recognise it as puppet show for that they think thats the outside world waiting for him.At this point of time I would say its only in the parrent's hands to grow a healthy child which needs lot of hard work.
Unfortunate to not listening the song today. Will listen soon and comment. Cheers

This is what the movies tryo to do... they make people accept- believe & then manipulate what is NOT REAL. But eventually when a greater group tends to think this is reality it becomes one with passing time!
//Don't feel fear to face the reality.//
:) I do not fear anything - that is not sense. And this is not what real life is... only a few who are influenced by these things are trying to see this as reality. Am only worried that what is not true is trying to take monstrous shape & spoil the young generation.
But the bottom line is that- parents have control in what thier child must/mustn't see. And it will be a hard struggle for them to win the stupidity.

leave the movies...do you think sunTV has any sensible program?? almost everything is related to cine industry!!!
Festival, chit chat with some cinema star!!! its all about cinema especially here in tamil nadu... but thats how these people make money, they dont have to care who watches what... and tell me one good reason why they need to be bothered
india le pothi pothi valathuradhu naale dhaan...pop. is 1.3b now... summa saying that, this is bad tat is bad nu velai ku aagadhu.. go to any temple and see what kind of sculptures they have... no one needs to go see a adult movie, those carvings are enough...

//I recently observed that a children channel called Jetix was showing WWF(wrestling). I feel this is not a program that kids should see.//
Yes kk,It is very shocking indeed.
Disney jetix'la idhu romba mukyamana show'va enna?
Also what is irritating me is that- i am a regular viewer of the disney channel(English one) where i dnt see any of those like that in what they play in tamil-jetix-disney's.
(Few such Shows that Disney tamil play are - DD's comedy which sometimes do require PG,WWF,Power rangers mariye vera oru show where there was once a french kissing scene, and a few more the names i dnt remember.)

SO are the people here who choose which program to telecast here losing sense?

Only the money makers know :)

//I totaly agree with all the points and I realised this four years ago. You and me are able to comment on this since we could recognise something is going wrong. But if today's kid growing in such a environment, could not recognise it as puppet show for that they think thats the outside world waiting for him.//
Very rightly said :)
It is worrying !!!
I wish every parent makes sure that the kid understands these r t bafoons & not what real life characters are.

//At this point of time I would say its only in the parrent's hands to grow a healthy child which needs lot of hard work.
Unfortunate to not listening the song today. Will listen soon and comment. Cheers//
